The Aeronautical Engineering Department was established at the beginning of the academic year 1975-1976 as part of the engineering faculty to qualify engineers in aeronautical and aerospace disciplines to prepare our nationals in this advanced field. About 400 students graduated up to now, most of them are employed in Libyan Airline Company, Libyan Air Defense, Air transport Companies, Civil Aviation Authority, and other industrial and research centers.

At present, the department depends fully on national staff members for teaching either undergraduate or graduate study programs. Some of our graduates were selected as teaching assistants at the department, they became staff members after finishing their graduate studies overseas and later on in the department.

Some of our staff members are helping the faculty of engineering in teaching general engineering courses, which are taught, to all disciplines. The department staff members offer their scientific knowledge to entities outside the faculty as well as cooperation to development and prosperity in different areas of specialization in aeronautical sciences and related specialization. Currently, there in the department 350 undergraduate students, 5 postgraduates.
